Education.....Dr. Bitter graduated from the School of Medicine at University of California, Irvine, in 1981, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor fraternity (a privilege granted to the top members of the graduating class). He interned in General Surgery at the University of Vermont, and completed his General Surgery training at Southern Illinois University. His Plastic Surgery training was at Southern Illinois University under the direction of Elvin Zook, MD. While at Southern Illinois University he participated in research in microsurgery. Each year he attends at least fifty hours of continuing medical education activities addressing Plastic Surgery topics. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Bitter's Practice.....Dr. Bitter started his Plastic Surgery practice in Roseburg, Oregon, in 1989. Throughout his career he has cared for a wide spectrum of Plastic Surgery problems. Although he continues to perform many types of surgery, his special interest is in body contouring procedures (breast augmentation, breast reduction, tummy tucks, liposuction, etc.) and hand surgery (carpal tunnel and other upper extremity nerve problems, Dupuytren's contracture, arthritis surgery, hand injuries, etc.). He performs surgery at Oregon Surgery Center, Mercy Medical Center, and in his office.
Service.....Service to the Douglas County medical community continues to be a high priority for Dr. Bitter. He has served in many leadership positions, including Chief of Staff at Douglas Community Hospital, Chief of Surgery at Mercy Medical Center, Board of Directors of Oregon Surgery Center, and Chairman of Credentials Committee at Mercy Medical Center. He is currently on the Board of Directors of Douglas County Individual Practice Association, and a member of the Management Committee of Professional Management of Oregon (the physician-led organization that manages the operating rooms at Mercy Medical Center and Oregon Surgery Center. He has been actively involved in initiating and managing the community-wide electronic medical record system in Douglas County. He has been named Physician of the Year twice since arriving in Roseburg.
